Wolverhampton Automatic Driving Lessons: How They Differ From Manual

We help you get used to automatic controls before you move into busier traffic. Your car has 2 pedals, the accelerator and the brake, while the gearbox handles gear changes.

You learn how to use D for driving, R for reversing and P for parking. This removes clutch control from moving off, hill starts and slow traffic, so you have fewer controls to coordinate.

Who Our Automatic Lessons Suit Best

We support learners starting from scratch and those who have already tried manual lessons. We use your experience to shape each lesson, helping you practise the skills that matter for your driving.

Automatic tuition may suit you if you:

  • Feel nervous about managing a clutch while watching the road.
  • Need to work towards your licence for work, college or family.
  • Have struggled with clutch control during previous manual lessons.
  • Plan to drive an automatic, hybrid or electric car after you pass.
  • Hold a full licence and want refresher lessons after a break.

If you feel nervous, we can begin on quiet roads and build up to more demanding traffic.

What You Practise in Automatic Driving Lessons in Wolverhampton

At Sandhu Driving School, we build your lessons around safe car control, then introduce more demanding roads as your skills develop. Your tuition covers these areas:

1

Car Controls

You learn the selector, foot brake and parking brake on a quiet street. Then we help you practise smooth starts and stops.

2

Junctions & Roundabouts

Our lessons develop your observation, positioning and judgement. You work towards busier roads, including Vine Island and the A4150 Inner Ring Road.

3

Manoeuvres

You practise bay parking, parallel parking and pulling up on the right. We help you combine accurate control with careful observation.

4

Independent Driving

We help you practise following road signs and sat nav directions. This prepares you for the 20 minutes of independent driving on test day.

5

Test Preparation

Your instructor uses a mock driving test to check your progress. We run it on roads near Wolverhampton Driving Test Centre in Ettingshall.

Automatic Driving Lessons FAQs

1. Can I Drive a Manual Car if I Pass in an Automatic?

No, passing in an automatic gives you a licence for automatic cars only. You need to pass a practical test in a manual car to drive manual cars.

2. Are Automatic Lessons More Expensive Than Manual Lessons?

You pay £35 for an hour of automatic lessons; our manual rate is £33 an hour. Many learners need fewer hours in an automatic, so the total cost can end up similar.

3. How Many Automatic Lessons Will I Need?

Your starting point, confidence and progress all affect how much tuition you need. We assess your driving and help you understand which skills need further practice.

4. Is the Automatic Driving Test Easier?

The test uses the same standard for manual and automatic cars. It can feel easier because you cannot stall and have no clutch to manage, but you still need safe observation and judgement.

5. Can I Take a Crash Course in an Automatic Car?

Yes, you can book between 10 and 40 hours of automatic intensive lessons with us. We run these courses 7 days a week. Your course requires both an advance payment and a provisional licence.
